Brahmi herb can treat Alzheimer's

Researchers are coming by evidence that herbs like brahmi, associated with the ayurveda system of medicine, can help ward off Alzheimer's disease and preserve one's mental faculties.

Although what exactly causes Alzheimer's is not known, sufferers experience inflammation of the brain, deposits of beta amyloid, traces of heavy metals and signs of oxidative stress.

Brahmi, a semi-aquatic plant, acts on all of these, said Con Stough, director of the National Institute of Complementary Medicine (NICM) involved in trials underway at Swinburne University of Technology Brain Sciences Institute (BSI).

Hair care in winter

Winter is a time when hair needs more attention. Many people suffer from dry and itchy scalp in this season.

Nalina, a spa therapist says that in winter one should not wash hair on a daily basis. Wash your hair three times a week. An oil massage with a light oil will help. Massaging warm oil on to the scalp will help avoid dryness in the scalp. However, daily oiling should be avoided, she says. Vasundhara, a hair care specialist cautions that one should not expose their hair to chemical treatments in winter. “It is wise to avoid streaking, ironing and hair colouring in winter,” she says. She recommends the use of ‘leave-in-conditioners’ which will keep the scalp moist for a longer time.
